Some Common Questions
How Does Market PreOrder Work?
PreOrder is to help you plan and myself plan for markets and pick ups. It can be hard to predict what is a big seller that weekend so reserve what you want ahead of time.
There is no upfront cost to preorder.
You can follow the preorder site, and just fill your cart. When you “checkout” please pick your location or contact me to arrange a pick up if outside normal market times. You can also send me an email with items you are looking for too. The total will be calculated at pick up based on weight.
Do you feed your poultry corn and soy?
Currently we feed our poultry custom non-gmo blends specific to their kind and needs. Our feed does currently have non-gmo corn and non-gmo soy mixed in.
We are looking into alternative options with our organic feedmill to use fishmeal and sunflower mixes to support a good fat cap.
Are they really fully on grass and how often do they move?
Well it definitely depends on the season, but overall yes! We are 100% committed to the true meaning of pasture-raised and members of the American Pasture Poultry Producers Association. We start our birds on grass as soon as its safe. For our ducklings and chicks that can be the first week in little huts during summer, but at about 2-3 weeks in early spring because of the cold. The turkeys however are usually 3-4 weeks of age because they can be really sensitive to temperature and moisture changes.
We move the birds every week. They have such a large area. While many sites say 4sq ft per bird, ours get about 25-50sq ft per bird, so they do not need to be moved as often to have fresh grass.
Does your processor use chlorine?
No. Our processor is USDA inspected but does not use any chemicals in their process. For our ducks they do use a USDA approved wax to assist with de-feathering if its needed. We are working them to optimize their process and our operations to assist with the big hurdle in de-feathering.
Do you use chemicals on your fields?
We do not use any chemicals on our pasture. We do conventional farming, but are planning to move to no-till farming practices.
Our birds are raised at minimum 100 ft from our conventional fields if not more. This is far outside of the standard “buffer zone” of 50ft the USDA sets between conventional and organic fields.
